Ko te whāinga matua o ngā rautaki whakaako reo tuarua, kia whakapiki i te reo o te ākonga kia kaiaka ai.
Hei tā Edmonds mā (2013), e ono ngā āhuatanga hei whakapakari kia piki ake te reo o te ākonga kia kaiaka ai. Me whakapakari:
- te reo whakaputa (oral production) – ko ngā momo oro e whakaputaina ana e te ākonga i a ia e kōrero ana, arā, ko te mita, ko te whakahua, ko te tangi o te reo, ko te rere o te reo me te haukaha (stress).
- te reo whakawhiti (discourse) – ko ngā momo kīanga me ngā kupu e whakahuatia ana e te ākonga kia mārama ai te kaiwhakarongo ki a ia.
- te puna kupu (vocabulary) – ko te whānui o ngā momo kupu e mōhiotia ana e te ākonga.

- te whakaaro Māori (Māori discourse) – ko ngā āheinga reo me ngā momo kīanga motuhake o te reo Māori.
- te taha hinengaro (cognition) – ko te āheinga ki te whai i ngā rautaki ā-hinengaro e tika ana hei hāpai i tōna reo Māori.
